PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS->>>
“Indigenous Capability for Pulp & Paper Machinery and Service”
Dear Delegates,
I have great pleasure in welcoming you all on my own behalf and on behalf of IPPTA in this two days seminar at Bangalore on “Indigenous Capability for Pulp and Paper Machinery and Services”
India today is the fastest growing paper market in the world and is expected to experience high growth in consumption patterns. I am sure that all major stake holders in this industry would avail this opportunity to showcase their strategies and capabilities.
Indian Paper Industry has witnessed significant growth due to the diverse but important input from the indigenous service providers, machinery manufacturers and technology suppliers. A major shift has come in the technology application with the inputs from a large number of overseas equipment, machinery, chemicals and technology suppliers. Most of the renowned International companies are having their offices in India through Franchisees or their collaborators. This has lead to improved quality of products and competitive prices indigenously. India has seen a rapid growth in Paper Industry and most of the Mills have increased their Production with improved quality products. At Present there are more than 500 medium and small Pulp and paper mills which produce paper and paper –boards using agricultural resides and waste appear as raw materials. The indigenous capabilities have supported these industries to bring down their cost of production, capital expenses and maintenance reasonably. Many of the service Providers and manufacturers have quality good enough to compete even with best in the world and therefore their products have food demand in the international market also. The indigenous suppliers and manufacturers are facing a tough competition from the open market economy and have survived the threat by way of their competitive price and products quality.
There is an urgent need to bridge the projected supply and demand gap. The main challenge still remains the shortage of fibrous raw materials and its continuously rising cost, high energy cost. If these issues are not addressed timely, it will detail all projection and growth figures and will have adverse impact on everyone associated with the paper industry.
Authors during these two days, will focus on various key issues/Views and share their experience for the benefit of Indian Paper Industry.
I wish the seminar a great success

Distinguished guest, Ladies and Gentlemen
I would like to congratulate IPPTA for organizing this seminar as a plateform to the Industry to share their day to day experience, forum for sharing of technological improvements in various machineries, equipments chemicals used in the industry and latest development in automation.
In last two decades Indian Pulp and Paper industry witnessed significant growth in every aspects of paper making like quality of paper, optimization of energy consumption, improvement in the environment front, number of machines and production capacity of machines.
Number of the medium scale mills are coming up with machines of high capacity of production.
The growth what industry has seen is mainly due to the following factors and still these factors continue to contribute.
• Average annual GDP growth rate
• Increasing literacy rate
• Population with increasing Middle class
• Declining poverty
• Increase in per capita income
We reached our capita paper consumption of around 9.18 kg. Still this is vry less as compared to US, Europe, China and average consumption for the globe. So the domestic demand is expected to grow(Source Business Standard)
1. India is fastest growing pulp and paper market in world registering growth of 10% over one year in per capita consumption and it is expected to grow in future due to increase of literacy and various government programs like “Sarv Siksha Abhiyan”
2. The growth rate of pulp and paper industry is around CAGR of 7-8%
3. Total installed capacity of pulp and paper is around 9.18 million tones /annum in 2009-2010 and expected to increase to ll.5 million tones by 201102012 (Source Business Standard)
4. Every increase of 1 kg in per capita consumption will increase demand by 1 million tons.
5. For fulfilling this demand industry needs to enhance the production capacity. Which will increase requirements of raw material? Raw material is one of the main constraints t be focused on, for future growth of the industry.
Indian pulp and paper industry is based on mix of raw material like-30% Wood based mills, 38% recycled paper based and 32% agro. Most of the recycled paper used in the industry is imported. Due to non availability of proper channel of collection of waste paper and also lack of awareness in the society, waste paper recovery is not up to standard. In recently concluded paper tech 2010 event in CII-Soharbji Godrej Green Business Centre Hyderabad, ITC shared about initiative taken by them for waste paper collection WOW (Wealth out of waste). Proper waste paper collection method will not only empower industry by catering raw material but also empower society by providing clean and green environment, creating job opportunities etc.
Another area to focus on is energy. According to the survey of Beuro of Energy Efficiency pulp and appear industry is one of the Top 10 Energy intensive industry. According to the report of BEE pulp and paper industry has enormous potential of saving energy
With improved sate of art high performing controllers and modules and pulp and paper industry specific libraries, optimization of field instruments from DCS is possible to maximize the performance
Unified solution for DCS, QCS, Actuators, Drives, Motors and Electrics gives opportunity of centralized control and thus is gives following benefits.
Reduced time to decision and action
Reduced risk through high integrity automation
Integration of information for greater level of visibility
Improved batch production profitability, consistency, and traceability
Optimizing plant asset availability and performance
